Sir Paul in police probe

Jan 16 2004

Paul McCartney at Kings Dock

SIR Paul McCartney is to be questioned by police over an alleged assault on a photographer.

Detectives are to speak to the multi-millionaire star about the incident which happened when he went to see illusionist David Blaine in his London Plexiglass box stunt, it emerged today.

Officers will interview Sir Paul (pictured top) about the alleged scuffle as a matter of routine.

They will then decide whether to pursue the matter further, a police spokesman said.

Police became involved after an incident in September when Sir Paul and some friends visited the scene of Blaine's stunt, in which he spent weeks suspended in a box near Tower Bridge.

Their inquiries concern an alleged scuffle with a photographer at the scene.

The former Beatle was said to have been upset after photographer Kevin Wheal tried to take a picture of him.

Mr Wheal claimed Sir Paul pushed him in the chest.

Sir Paul has denied any wrongdoing, describing his involvement as being part of "a group of friends on a night out".
