Bullied to death

Jul 3 2003

by Jonathan Caswell & Matt Slater, Liverpool Echo

A BULLIED schoolboy has died at his Merseyside home after taking an overdose of painkillers.

Thomas Thompson

Thomas Thompson, 11, swallowed 12 pills in his bedroom in Wallasey yesterday.

His mother Sandra arrived home from work at around 7pm and found him slumped on the bedroom floor.

Today Mrs Thompson, 33, said her son had been a victim of bullying at the Wallasey School where he was a pupil.

"He was a good kid, a good laugh, but a bit different from other lads of his age," she said.

"Clearly this was a cry for help. I have no words to describe those people who persecuted and taunted him other than I hate them.

"They can hang their heads in shame."

She made a frantic 999 call and tried to bring him round as paramedics raced to the home on Beechcroft Road.

The ambulance crew battled to save his life but he had suffered a heart attack and died inside the house.

A Mersey ambulance spokesman said they were treating the youngster for almost half an hour. painkillers.

His mother, who works at the Pyramids shopping centre, added: "He was always a trier at school. Had a good go at anything, even things he didn't enjoy or like.

"We are absolutely devastated. I can't believe I have lost my son in this way."

He mother described him as a passionate anti-war campaigner despite his tender age . He regularly attended rallies in Liverpool.

"Just before the war he addressed a meeting at St George's Hall and received a standing ovation on his speech about why we should not be in Iraq.

"All his fellow campaigners admired him."

Today his uncle, Stuart Thompson, said: "Thomas was a very clever lad and he was picked on for that. It was a gang of other boys who tormented him.

"They bullied him very badly and it really got him down. I just think he could not cope anymore.

"This is an absolute tragedy for the whole family but especially his mum and dad because he was a smashing young man.

"Thomas was not like the other boys because he was not into sport and would just concentrate on his school work."

Merseyside police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident and the information had been passed to the Wirral coroner who will open an inquest.

Thomas, who would have been 12 next month, wanted to be a science teacher.

His sister Alexandra, eight, is staying with relatives.

Martin Pope, headteacher of Wallasey School in Birket Avenue, said: "The whole school community is deeply shocked and saddened to hear of Thomas's death. Thomas hadn't been with us very long but he will be very sadly missed.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time and the school community will be holding a special assembly later in the day to offer prayers for Thomas and his family."

Wallasey School is a co-educational school in Moreton with 1,064 pupils.

Last year it was named as the worst performing school in the borough with only 20% of pupils getting five or more GCSEs at grades A-C.
