Preacher on fraud charge

Jul 7 2003

The Rev Raymond Heap

A CHURCH minister has been accused of conning elderly people out of thousands of pounds in savings.

The Rev Raymond Heap, allegedly preyed on pensioners by pretending he was investing their money and they were helping the church.

The 61-year-old, formerly of the independent Norris Green Baptist church, has been charged with defrauding one woman of £42,000.

He is alleged to have claimed the money was for repairing a church roof and a new business.

Heap, of Mostyn Street, Wallasey, faces two other charges of obtaining money from worshippers.

Heap allegedly defrauded the woman, in her 80s and a member of Dovecot Evangelical church, before July 18, 2002.

Two elderly men said they were defrauded of £30,000 and £8,000 each. It is claimed he falsely said he was investing in a high interest scheme.

Heap left Norris Green Baptist church, Parthenon Drive, nearly six years ago. But he kept in touch with Baptists across the area.

The new Norris Green church pastor, Bernard Ward, said today: "The cases do not relate to when he was at the church. He has not been connected to the church for more than four years."

Heap, no longer serving as a minister, appeared before Knowsley magistrates court last Thursday to face the charges. He was granted bail until July 24 when he will be sent to Liverpool crown court.
