Yoko Ono

YOKO Ono spoke of her pride as Liverpool bestowed the freedom of the city on New York.

John Lennon's widow attended a ceremony in New York's Central park yesterday (Thursday, August 28) and spoke of her love for Liverpool.

She witnessed a civic delegation, led by Lord Mayor Cllr Ron Gould, present commemorative scrolls to New York officials at the park's Strawberry Fields landmark.

The award was confirmed almost two years ago in honour of those who lost their lives on September 11.

Yoko, who lives in the Dakota building nearby, said: "Liverpool is a beautiful city and has a beautiful river. Liverpool nurtures creativity and it nurtured John.

"I love Liverpool and I am proud to be standing here today as we present these freedom scrolls to bring these two great cities even closer together."

During the ceremony Cllr Gould unveiled a bench donated by the city of Liverpool in honour of the victims of the plane attacks.

The Lord Mayor was joined by Merseyside's chief fire officer Tony McGuirk, and 10 firefighters from Low Hill fire station, as well as Liverpool FC's chaplain Bill Bygroves.

Mr McGuirk presented a book of condolence to the New York fire service in honour of everyone who died in the terrorist attacks.

Cllr Gould said: "The people of New York showed immense strength and kindness in the face of such adversity and this ceremony reaffirmed centuries-old friendship between our two cities."

The crew of the Liverpool Clipper also attended ahead of the final leg of the Round the World Yacht Race.

The ECHO-sponsored yacht is in fourth place.
