Hunters take to streets in protest

Oct 13 2003

By Sam Lister Daily Post Staff

CHESHIRE'S fox hunting fraternity is to take to the streets in a bid to stop blood sport being banned.

Hundreds of hunt supporters are expected to turn up to the mass rally and pledge to carry on with the activity if it is banned, even if it lands them in jail.

The protest has been organised by the Countryside Alliance and will be held at Eaton Aerodrome, Cheshire, on November 1.

Tom Fell, from the Countryside Alliance for the North West, said: "This is not a step that anyone will be taking lightly, but many people feel that it is a legitimate act of protest in response to the threat of deeply prejudiced legislation."

The protesters have named it Declaration Day because riders and followers will sign up to an agreement committing them to break the law if hunting is banned.

They say they want the right to carry on hunting legitimately, but will continue regardless if it is outlawed and are prepared to face the consequences.

The protesters will be supported by hunt followers from Merseyside, Manchester and North Wales.

It is one of 12 meetings being held across England and Wales. Foxhounds, lurchers, greyhounds, beagles, minkhounds, terriers and other hunting and working dogs will all be present.

Mr Fell added: "The mass meet on Declaration Day will give individuals the opportunity to make clear their intention to take part in peaceful but committed civil disobedience in the event of a ban on hunting being imposed.

"This nationwide show of strength and unity will send a clear message that we will not accept unjust law."
