Lack of places at single sex schools

Oct 15 2003

By Laura Davis Daily Post Staff

HUNDREDS of parents are unable to send their children to the school of their choice, Liverpool councillors claim.

A huge shortage of places in single sex schools means that around a third of pupils are being refused entry.

Now a group of councillors are calling for a review into Liverpool's provision of single sex education.

Coun Steve Radford, leader of the Liberal Party and Tuebrook councillor, said: "In Liverpool we tend to accommodate the vast majority of parents' first choices of school.

"However, this is not the case for single sex education particularly in the north of the city."

A recent report revealed that 210 pupils were refused places in the only two Liverpool non denominational single sex schools.

Holly Lodge girls school received 389 applications for 240 places in 2002 and West Derby Boys School was sent 301 applications for 240 places.

Coun Radford added: "West Derby Boys School, currently located on two sites, is due to be single-sited.

"Why not, as part of this, make it the size of school that can accommodate more pupils.

"The council should also look at expanding the intake of Holly Lodge or Broughton Hall schools and maybe consider opening another secondary girls school in the area."

The motion will be put in front of full council this evening.
