The Flying Picket

THE future of a top Merseyside music venue looked bleak today (Thursday, October 23) after its home of more than 20 years was put up for sale.

The Picket on Hardman Street has played host to many of the top bands to come out of Liverpool, including The La's, Cast, Space and The Coral.

The Picket is housed in the grounds of the People's Centre, formerly the Merseyside Trade Union and Unemployed Resource Centre, which opened in 1979, but the centre's management board has decided to sell the building because of a funding shortfall.

The board met to discuss a range of proposals aimed at preserving both the People's Centre and The Picket last night.

After a vote, all other options were rejected and the board decided to put the centre on the market.

Co-ordinator Bob Braddock said: "The board had no real option other than to sell the building."

Yoko Ono, Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have all contributed to keeping the club open in the past.
