Re-release of Beatle's 1972 hit

POP Idol contestants will be facing some surprise competition for this year's Christmas number one slot. They are competing against John Lennon for the top spot with the same song. The Pop Idol finalists, from the Saturday night television show, are releasing a cover of Lennon's 1972 hit Merry Christmas (War Is Over). But this week Parlophone, who owns the former Beatles back catalogue, has released the original version of the track. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT The song was originally recorded in October. 1971, the first full month that Lennon was an American resident. A spokesman for Parlophone said last night: "We are releasing the single to publicise the DVD and album that is currently out, called Lennon Legend.
