Prisoners enjoy festive feast - but jail officers can't even get porridge

Dec 22 2003

CHRISTMAS dinner has been cancelled for prison officers at HMP Liverpool this year - despite inmates being treated to a three-course festive feast.

Prison officials will close the officers' mess at Liverpool Prison on Christmas and Boxing Day.

But prisoners at the jail in Walton are to enjoy two slap-up days of yuletide fare including a full English breakfast, turkey with all the trimmings and a cold meat supper.

Last night, prison managers were accused of preferential treatment after the Christmas menu was handed out to inmates.

An enraged prison officer's wife said: "I think it's disgusting. The prisoners are getting treated better than the officers. They have been told they have to cook their own meals in the staff tea-rooms on each wing.

"Prison officers know that they have to work on Christmas Day and they accept that but you would think they would get treated a bit better than this."

All prisoners will be able to enjoy a full English breakfast on Christmas morning.

At lunch they will be served cream of leek soup as a starter followed by a traditional Christmas dinner including turkey breast, sausages, stuffing, saute potatoes, sprouts, cauliflower and onion gravy.

They can then tuck into cheese and crackers followed, if they still have room, by Christmas pudding with rum sauce.

In the evening they will enjoy another huge feast comprising chicken thigh, pork pie, sliced beef, quiche, salad, Christmas cake, Danish whirl , apples, satsumas, mince pies and chocolate biscuits.

The Boxing day menu includes lamb steaklette, battered hoki and vegan lasagne.

In contrast, prison officers will have access to microwaves in the small staff kitchens on each wing to reheat any cold Christmas dinner they bring in at the beginning of their shift.

Alternatively, they can buy food from the prisoner's kitchen for about £3.
