George Harrison plaque

A TWO-YEAR campaign to erect a memorial at the birthplace of George Harrison ended when a woman living at the house announced: "You're not putting that here!"

Beatles fans have been pushing for a plaque to be erected at the house where Harrison was born since he died in November 2001.

They claimed success and commissioned the elaborate tribute to be made.

Yesterday they took it to the house in Arnold Grove, Wavertree, for an unveiling ceremony.

But as a small crowd assembled, the angry homeowner came out and told them to take the plaque away.

Minutes later they shuffled away to think again.

The campaigners today said they were amazed by the rebuttal, and were wondering what to do next.

They had been lobbying Liverpool council and carried out a worldwide poll on the internet to decide where the Harrison memorial should be sited.

His birthplace at Arnold Grove was the clear winner.

Beatles fanclub webmaster David Bedford, 38, from Mossley Hill, said: "Arnold Grove won ahead of Penny Lane.

"It obviously has a very important place in Beatles history.

"I was hoping that George's widow Olivia would have been able to unveil the memorial and I have been with his sister Louise to see what she thinks.

"But when we got to the house with the plaque yesterday the woman who lives there came out and said she didn't want it there."

The plaque was prepared by Liverpool-based design firm Northern Designs.

Fred O'Brien from the company said: "I was thrilled to be invited to work on this project.

"George is one of the city's favourite sons.

"But now it looks like we might have to come up with a different site."
