Presenter Linda McDermot said: "He was taken ill and had suffered a mild heart attack. He is now recovering in hospital. All of us here wish him well.
"He will be much missed around the station because he is so well liked and such a character.
"He is always walking around the place spouting Italian that no-one else understands.
"And listeners to his opera programme will miss him enormously.
"He's an ex-docker, an ex-policeman, an ex-folk singer. he's a man of many mantles."
Brian has been presenting the Sunday evening opera programme after being moved from his lunchtime slot.
