Yoko visits John's school

Jul 2 2001

Liverpool Echo

YOKO Ono went back to school today to learn all about her late husband, John Lennon.

Ms Ono took a special detour during her tour of Liverpool to visit Dovedale Infants School in Mossley Hill where John attended as a boy.

And the pupils at the school gave the former Beatle's widow a warm Liverpool welcome.

"I am very emotional," she admitted after getting a guided tour of the school. "It's fantastic, I didn't think the experience was going to this emotional.

"I am very happy and very glad that I came."

Last year, Yoko made a 'substantial donation' to the school to help pay for a new playground.

And she handed over more cash today to help complete the job.

John went to Dovedale Infants between 1946 and 1948. And when he first brought Yoko back to Liverpool, he made a point of taking her there.

She added: "John was a very high spirited boy, I'm sure, but he remembered his school days so dearly.

"When he brought me here to Liverpool for the first time he showed me this school. They were good days for him."

Yoko visited each classroom in the infants school to meet the children. When they thanked her for coming she told them: "I wanted to come and see you.

"I am very glad I came. Saying thank you is so sweet. I will always remember you."

The money she has donated had been used to pay for a new playground for the infants school.

Yoko even took time out to play on one of the giant pencils erected in the centre of the yard.

Head teacher Wen Williams said: "I was a huge Beatles fan. I never thought that one day I would be the head at John's old school, never mind meet Yoko.

"What she has done is wonderful. We are very grateful for her coming."

Yoko was this afternoon receiving an honorary degree from Liverpool University at a ceremony at the Philharmonic Hall.

This morning she officially renamed Liverpool Airport as Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
