John Pilson watches the fight to save his dog

FIREFIGHTERS tried in vain to rescue a dog who got stuck chasing a cat.

Gill the Jack Russell ran down a disused gas mains pipe in Litherland Road, Bootle, on a walk with her owner, John Pilson, 12.

When she failed to come out the other end, John raised the alarm. For nine hours, firefighters tried to free the pet.

But Gill was dead by the time she was pulled from the pipe.

John said: "We could hear her barking and crying, but couldn't see her. I should never have let her out of my sight."

Fire spokesman Alex MacDougall said: "We think the dog came up against water but could not go back."
