MP: I want a crackdown on BB guns

WIRRAL West MP Stephen Hesford, who backed David Hazel and Patti Williams' campaign for BB guns to be banned, said he was "very concerned" about the guns being for sale so cheaply.

He said: "Air weapons continue to be a problem generally. We have legislation going through Parliament at the moment to crack down on guns and knives and I made a speech calling for these guns to be included in this.

" The minister Hazel Blears said she would look at the issue at the time, and hopefully when Parliament returns, the idea is that this could be amended."

Mr Hesford said the deputy speaker of the House of Commons had been visibly upset he described the case of David Hazel.

Mr Hesford said: "The speakers usually sit through all kinds of things and do not tend make any kind of judgement on it."

I'm so angry they are still on sale

LAST year David Hazel was left paralysed from the waist down after being shot in the back by a man with a BB gun in what police described as a random and motiveless attack.

The former soldier's spinal cord was severed by a ball bearing in the attack in outside his home in Woodchurch, Wirral, in June 2004.

Today he said he still could not believe these types of guns were available in high street shops.

Mr Hazel is recovering from an operation to ease his pain following months of treatment and physiotherapy to help him get used being in a wheelchair.

He said: "I'm so angry they are still on sale. These guns are not toys, they are dangerous weapons and they should not be sold in this type of shop."

Mr Hazel, a delivery driver, was getting into his car after kissing partner Patti Williams and son Ethan goodbye on the doorstep of their Houghton Road home when another driver pulled up and hurled abuse before shooting him in the back.

He spent seven months in a spinal unit, and on his return to Wirral he did not want to return to his former home and the family have now moved to Eastham.

Police say they are still committed to seeking justice for the 35-year-old, although no one has been charged with the shooting.

On September 21 last year, police arrested an Anfield man, aged 26, on suspicion of wounding, and a 22-year-old woman, originally from Wirral but living at that time in Anfield, on suspicion of conspiracy to commit wounding. No charges were brought.

Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or Upton CID on 777 2465.
