Acne remedy 'potential killer'

ROACCUTANE is a highly effective drug taken against acne.

But according to some patients, it is also a potential killer responsible for their depression, psychotic symptoms and suicide attempts.

Since it became available in 1982 more than 12 million people, mainly aged 13 to 23, have taken the drug.

In 1998 the UK Committee on Safety of Medicines took the unusual step of introducing warnings on the product which say: "Roaccutane may cause depression, psychotic symptoms and, rarely, suicide attempts and suicide."

Drugs giant Roche insists that there is no proven relationship between the onset of depression and its product.

Representatives from the company failed to answer a request by Liverpool coroner Andre Rebello to attend the inquest.

He said: "For any court to be treated in contempt in that way is not a very good start."
