This year’s Liverpool festival is the first with a smoking ban imposed although those desperate for a cigarette will be allowed to smoke outside.
However, anyone without tickets for the remaining five sessions, tonight plus tomorrow and Saturday afternoon and evening, have been advised that there will be no tickets available on the door.
For the disappointed, a number of other city centre pubs are staging admission-free beer festivals of their own to cater for those unable to get into the main event, including the Augustus John on nearby Peach Street and the Ship and Mitre on Dale Street.
“We’ve been running ours in conjunction with the main one for the past three years and it gets more popular every time we do it,” said the John’s head barman, Ifan James.
At the Ship, landlord Brian Corrin will have more than 100 real ales for sale on draught, using every available spare inch downstairs.
Upstairs, the pub will also be unveiling its beautifully refurbished Art Deco function room, complete with original windows.
