Hanover Street is next to benefit in £2.9m scheme to replace water pipes

UNITED Utilities said last night that the Hanover Street work was the next phase of a £2.9m scheme to improve the quality of tap water for shops and businesses in the city centre.

The company is replacing around 39km of largely Victorian pipes across the city centre as part of the investment scheme.

These works are due to be completed before September 2007 so as not to cause any inconvenience during Liverpool's City of Culture year.

Peter Dalton, United Utilities programme manager, said: "These water mains need bringing into the 21st century.

"Throughout the project we have been working closely with Liverpool City Council to fit in with the major refurbishment of the city centre.

"I would ask everyone to be patient while we carry out this essential work. This is one of the many investment schemes our customers' bills help to fund and the long-term benefits will be well worth it."

United Utilities will take four months to complete and access will be maintained for pedestrians and local businesses.
