Last night Corrine’s grandmother Angela Higgins declined to comment when contacted by the Daily Post.
According to Mellissa Makhaba, the baptism was carried out by Fr Wentworth, the former parish priest at St Peter and Paul’s Church on August 23. Fr Wentworth retired a week later.
Fr John Feeney, who took over as parish priest of St Peter and Paul’s Church in September, said he was unable to give any details of baptisms due the Data Protection Act.
But Fr John Joyce, a spokesman for the Shrewsbury Diocese of the Catholic Church, said the case “sounds a little unusual to say the least”.
He said: “I would always urge that it was the parents’ decision about baptism.” But he said at least one parent should give consent.
Fr Joyce said the case would require further investigation, and if Mellissa Makhaba wanted to complain she should contact the new parish priest at St Peter and Paul’s.
