City has to slash budget by £50m

Feb 5 2007

by Nick Coligan, Liverpool Echo

Leader of Liverpool City Council, Cllr Warren Bradley

THE full scale of the cash crisis facing Liverpool council is revealed today.

Senior councillors have admitted they are battling to slash almost £50m from this year’s budget – and are considering a host of controversial ideas.

Town hall officials have suggested shutting swimming pools and leisure centres, reducing school uniform allowances and axing pest control to save money.

That is in addition to the proposal which emerged last week to mortgage property including Millennium House and the municipal buildings, which the ECHO understands is now unlikely to happen.

None of the action plans put forward by town hall finance officials has yet been approved by councillors.

But it shows the extent of the council’s financial headache – it must save £47.1m this year – that such drastic measures are being considered.

Money-saving suggestions include:

* Shutting Walton and Newhall swimming pools, and Croxteth and Toxteth leisure centres.

* Reducing library opening hours and shutting the least-used and worst-condition facilities in Croxteth, Hunts Cross, Lister Drive and Edge Hill.

* Cutting the number of school crossing patrols.

* Charging for replacement wheelie bins and the Bulky Bob’s recycling service.

* Not proceeding with the Allerton one-stop shop project.
