City has to slash budget by £50m

Council leader Warren Bradley said: “Officers bring forward ideas to save money every year and offer them to all political groups for consideration, but it does not mean we will approve them. “This situation is a reflection of the fact we got a poor government settlement, well under the national average. “Last week we came up with other options which we have given to the officers to work through.” But Labour opposition leader Joe Anderson said: “This is a major disaster for the city. “The council is in a financial mess and the Lib Dems are paying the price for not raising council tax a few years ago, when we suggested small increases. “It is rich for them to criticise what happened in the 1980s when this is on the same scale.” Story continues ADVERTISEMENT Other proposals include: * Raising council tax by the maximum 5% this year, as opposed to the predicted 3-3.75%. * Postponing a £7.7m Capital of Culture payment until after 2008. * Checking that the 9,000 addresses claiming a single-occupancy discount on tax bills only have one person living there. Cllr Bradley said: “There are other places we can find savings and that is something we have done well in the past. “I think our budget will be accepted on March 7 as a step forward and one of the best in the country.” READ more news from the Liverpool ECHO - click here
