City Iraqi bids to rebuild country

While Saddam was in power, he could not go back to visit his family.

He returned this year for the first time.

His organisation, The Association of British-Iraqi Professionals, aims to forge educational links between the two countries to help the rebuilding.

Hameed said: "It is a nonpolitical organisation and a nonreligious one.

"We are promoting co-operation between British and Iraqi universities.

"The way to move a society forward is to start with education."

The association, which has 50 members, has already distributed books to Iraqi universities and Hameed is hoping to set up a series of student exchanges.

He said: "There is trust between British and Iraqis on an individual basis, but at the moment a large number of Iraqis are distrustful of the troops out there.

"We are hoping education is the way forward.

"Children in Iraq will walk miles just to get to school.

"They are so keen to learn. We want to build on that."
