I thought at last I would be able to work at home for a few years

BUILDER Jimmy Siner, 50, from Walton runs his own construction firm. He said: "I don't know what you have to do to get a job in this city. I drive past all the regeneration sites in Bootle and on the side of the vans are all 0161 numbers.

"I wrote to Laing O'Rourke a year ago offering my services and got nowhere. It is very disappointing. There should be someone overseeing things so that local lads and companies get work.

"I know of at least 10 tradesmen who are scratching around for work. We are banging our heads against a brick wall. There is a lot of anger and resentment over this."

He said: "I have just come back from five months in Canada. I would happily turn down jobs away for local work because I have a wife and two daughters who I worry about when I am working abroad.

"When I heard about the Paradise Street project and Liverpool becoming Capital of Culture I thought that at last I would be able to work at home for a few years.

"There should be proper checks made to make sure that local labour is used. I think that once these building jobs come up that they should be made to have 75% local labour.

"I would take great pride in working on sites in my own city."
