"Although it's not a race, some cyclists can complete the round trip in just over two hours.
"We always get a really good mix of people. Some take part with their children, while we also have blind riders on the back of tandems with sighted pilots."
The ride started yesterday morning by the Birkenhead tunnel entrance, with the finishing line at nearby William Brown Street. Cyclists are not usually allowed to ride through the tunnels, which are operated on tolls.
Among those resting in William Brown Street after completing the arduous round trip were husband and wife team Joe and Ann Price, from Aigburth.
Mrs Price, a mentor at Merseyview School in Aigburth, said: "It's been a brilliant day. The event was really well planned and the traffic was kept under control.
"Going through the tunnels was a highlight, and you get to see parts of Merseyside you don't normally see, like all the Wirral villages such as Neston and Burton."
Her husband Joe added: "We're keen cyclists, but not serious. This was the longest bike ride we'd ever attempted, but you get encouragement from people lining the route."
As well as the full round trip, participants have a choice of two shorter routes: the 30-mile halfway route to the Countess of Chester Health Park, and a 25-mile circular route.
The event is organised on behalf of the three Liverpool primary care trusts, North, Central and South Liverpool, and sponsored by Merseytravel.
