Commuters faced disruption as ice and snow froze junctions
COMMUTERS across Merseyside faced disruption on the trains as they made their way into work yesterday morning.
Ice and snow on the line froze three major junctions and stopped trains across the network.
Trains stopped at Garston and Chester, and the Wirral line was disrupted by the weather. One reason given for delays was snow sticking between the points on the track, preventing signals engineers from switching the lines.
Keith Lumley, a spokesman for Network Rail, said: "There was a major points failure at Chester on the train travelling towards Liverpool.
"This was purely down to the snow on the points of the tracks. Most of them have heaters which keep them from freezing, but this was because the heavy snowfall was preventing the tracks moving."
Rudi Boersma, spokesman for Merseyrail, said: "We start running trains at 5.30am and first thing yesterday we had some problems with points on the network in Garston, Bootle and Sandhills.
"We were still able to run a regular service but the initial delays caused a domino effect.
"The snow caused disruption to the line but we put it right fairly quickly and from 7.30am onwards it was fine. We don't predict any further delays."
