THE Japanese art of spiritual healing, Reiki was first discovered by Mikao Usui around the beginning of the 20th century after his 14-year search for the secret to physical wellbeing.
He found the answer in an ancient sacred text in a Zen monastery, which has since disappeared.
Usui released his power to heal when he stumbled down a mountain where he had been meditating, and stubbed his toe.
When he placed his hand on his foot, it stopped hurting and he realised his quest was over.
In its truest form, Reiki is a profound spiritual path, not just a way to cure.
The physical part of the method involves a series of 20 touches, known as holds, which allow the healing force to flow into the injured part of the body.
