A £33m plan to transform one of Liverpool’s poorest communities could be on the way. Housing officials have rewritten three-year-old proposals to build houses and flats in Granby Triangle and refurbish old terraced homes. But residents are still unhappy with the ideas and want changes. Granby Triangle consists of four roads, Beaconsfield Street, Cairns Street, Jermyn Street and Ducie Street, off Granby Street, Toxteth. It was once a thriving neighbourhood, but only 55 out of almost 300 homes are still occupied. Liverpool council now wants to refurbish 70% of the homes to 21st century standards, with the rest bulldozed and rebuilt. The plan follows long talks with developer Lovell and community leaders, who were opposed to the amount of demolition in the previous proposal. Officials now hope the six-year plan due to be approved by councillors today will win the community’s support. But residents claim too much property will still be bulldozed and do not want to move out of their homes, even temporarily. Jermyn Street resident Dorothy Kuya of the Granby residents association, said: “We do not see the reason for demolition. It might be more economical for them, but it disrupts the community and we have had enough of that. “We asked for a formal consultation group to be set up so individuals and organisations affected by the plan can get involved.” The scheme involves improving properties in four stages, so residents in the later phases of the scheme can be moved into the first refurbished or rebuilt homes. Cath Green, the council’s assistant housing director, said: “These proposals will ensure the long-term sustainability of the remaining properties. “We will never get 100% support from residents. But everyone can stay in the area if they want to, in a modernised property meeting their requirements. “The scheme will provide two, three and four-bedroom properties, so there should not be anyone currently living in the area whose needs cannot be accommodated.” nick.coligan@liverpool.com
