Her family abused murder victim's relatives

Feb 28 2007

Marie Craig

THE mother of a convicted killer who stabbed a Liverpool teenager to death has been banned from terrorising the victim’s family.

Gary Craig, 18, was locked up for life in September for knifing Liam Culshaw, 18, outside his home in Walton.

Over the 12 months since the A-level student’s murder, his family have endured taunts and abuse from the killer’s gang, called the Cem Eds.

Now Gary Craig’s mother, Marie Craig, 48, has been given an interim anti-social behaviour order in a bid to end the Culshaw family’s nightmare.

The asbo controls what the mother-of-seven is allowed to do and prevents her from abusing the victim’s parents, who live only a few hundred yards away.

The order bars Craig from threatening anyone visiting the makeshift shrine and plaque which has been erected on Crosgrove Road, the spot where Liam was murdered.

Craig also faces an eviction hearing in April when the court could order her to vacate the family home.

Depending on the result of that hearing, the interim anti-social behaviour order could be scrapped or made permanent.

Anita Culshaw, Liam’s mother, said: “We can’t walk down the road because we feel so intimidated.

“We just haven’t been allowed to grieve for Liam. There’s been no words for our nightmare, it just beggars belief.”

The Culshaw family have been subjected to vile taunts by the Cem Eds gang, of which Gary Craig was a member.

They have mocked them by acting out pretend stabbings as they walk past before erupting in howls of laughter.

The words “Culshaw Scum” were spotted daubed on the gates of Anfield cemetery where the mob often gathers.

The Culshaws say they rarely leave their house because of the intimidation and no longer shop in the area.

Today, the ECHO can reveal that Anita Culshaw used to teach some of Marie Craig’s seven sons when they were younger.

She worked as a volunteer at the Florence Melly school, Walton, where she would help them with classwork.

Her husband would sometimes drive the boys to school in his taxi.

Everton fan Liam was repeatedly knifed last March after he challenged youths doing “doughnuts” with a motorbike on a grass verge, splattering his home with mud.

Julian Linskill, representing Mrs Craig, said: “It seems unfort-unate that a woman whose son is now serving a life sentence, who herself has committed no crime, should be forced out of the family home.

“This is an excess of political zeal. We will be fighting this decision.”
