Tracey Walker, a manager in the information strategy department at Fazakerley hospital, was on holiday in Sri Lanka when the earthquake hit.
Tracey, originally from Bootle, but now living in Widnes, said: "It was quite amazing how calm people were. We did not know what was happening - we thought 'it will be gone in a minute.' We did not realise how bad things were."
Now safe in Colombo, she paid tribute to the courage of local people, saying: "You just cannot comprehend how they are.
"They are trying to stick together and be united at a horrible time."
Returning survivors described the scenes on Thai beaches as "like a holocaust".
