BRACHYTHERAPY, also called implant radiation, is a procedure in which radioactive material is placed directly into or near the cancer.
The radiation is sealed in needles, seeds, wires, or catheters. It gives a high radiation dose to the tumour while reducing the radiation exposure in the surrounding healthy tissues.
The term "brachy" is the Greek word for short distance - and brachytherapy is radiation therapy given at a short distance.
It is often used in treating humans with certain forms of the illness, particularly cervical and prostate cancer.
