Inquiry into scare over Liverpool

Mar 7 2007

by Deborah James, Liverpool Daily Post

An EasyJet Airbus 319

A PRIVATE jet flew so close to a passenger plane that the pilot was forced to climb as he approached Liverpool John Lennon airport.

Air investigators are probing how the private cargo jet got so close to the Easyjet flight from Krakow, which was carrying around 120 passengers.

The pilot on the Airbus 319 reported feeling uncomfortable after the six-seater C-45 was spotted by on-board equipment, just after 10pm on Monday.

Easyjet last night confirmed the plane was forced to climb as a precaution to avoid the oncoming craft.

But it landed safely on time at 10.35pm.

An Easyjet spokeswoman stressed there was no danger to passengers, who were not told about the incident.

She said the light aircraft, which was on its was back to Germany after delivering car parts for Vauxhall, would not have been visible to the naked eye as it was around two miles away.

JLA confirmed the incident, which happened just outside Liverpool airspace, was very rare.

It is officially classified as a “loss of separation” incident, rather than a near-miss.
