THE man behind showpiece Capital of Culture production Adelphi – The Musical wants to base it on real-life tales of romance from the hotel.
In his first interview about the project, which is expected to be one of the highlights of 2008, writer Phil Willmott said he wants it to be a funny, extra- vagant production that will appeal to everyone.
It will be staged as part of the Everyman and Playhouse’s programme for the celebration year.
Willmott, who produced Around The World in 80 Days for the Playhouse, wants to capture the Adelphi in its heyday.
He told the Daily Post: “The Adelphi is such a big part of Liverpool. It’s romantic but full of scandal.
“The architecture is fabulous. When I walk into the amazing big reception rooms, it takes your breath away. In the ’20s and ’30s, it would take the passengers from the cruise liners. Now it’s got that kind of faded glamour. It captures the grandeur of Victorian Liverpool. I love it. I always try to stop there when I’m in Liverpool.
“This is something I’ve been thinking about doing for years. Now is the perfect time.”
