THE Bishop of Liverpool, The Rt Rev James Jones, has written a number of books, including The Moral Leader, which explores key questions about the relevance of the Christian message to public life.
His new book, Jesus and the Earth, argues strongly for an ethical approach to the environment and calls for repentance for the exploitation and abuse that human society has inflicted upon the planet.
He argues that Christianity is as relevant now as it ever has been, particularly when it comes to the issue of offering people spiritual support.
He said: "I am not surprised by the interest which is being shown in this debate.
People do care about moral and spiritual dimensions of society and personal life.
"Christianity is relevant to modern society, and that is because it offers a culture of hope in a world where people are increasingly pessimistic about the future of the earth.
"It offers a culture of justice in a world where in spite of scientific advances the majority still live in poverty.
"It offers a culture of forgiveness in a world where the media is so merciless and unforgiving.
"It offers a culture of spiritual fulfilment in a world where the motivation of many people is driven solely by material gain."
Rt Rev Jones is well known for his contributions to BBC programmes such as Newsnight and Today as well as his writing.
