Some of the measures that could give Merseyside a better transport system
A NUMBER of major schemes supported during the Merseyside Transport Plan are cross-border and aimed at improving access to and from the sub-region. These include:
* Extending the Merseyrail system beyond Bidston to Wrexham. This would improve public transport links between Deeside and Broughton, where Airbus has its major plant, to Liverpool and greater Merseyside.
* The re-instatement of the Halton Curve through Runcorn and Frodsham would improve rail links to the airport from Chester and North Wales. The scenic route, crossing the Weaver Valley close to the M56, once carried passenger trains from Liverpool to Cheshire and North Wales.
* Highest priority given to supporting a new river crossing of the Mersey between Widnes and Runcorn.
* A new access road, funding by the private sector, is suggested as a link from the Liverpool and Halton to the airport.
