Rise and rise of Merseyside as film location and facilities centre

THE MERSEYSIDE film industry is a continuing success story.

Last month it was announced that one of the key figures in the UK film industry is to promote Liverpool and the North West as one of Europe's top movie capitals.

Steve Norris from UK Film Council International believes the belt between Liverpool and Manchester could attract producers who currently seek locations for their films in Eastern Europe.

Parts of major Hollywood films have been shot in the city.

Alfie had scenes shot in Liverpool city centre which brought £1.5m into the local economy.

Among the productions shot in the city last year were Millions, a black comedy starring James Nesbitt, and Digital Jesus which used Stanley Dock,

Exchange Flags and Old Hall Street to double as New York.

Nine network television programmes were also shot in the city.
