Cllr Storey says he was chosen because of his experience as a councillor and chairman of the appointments panel.

He added: "Cllr Anderson did not oppose my selection and took part in the long-listing of candidates without saying a word.

"Had he come to me before we started and said he was unhappy, we could have discussed it then.

"This appointment is being dealt with in a thoroughly professional way and I am gobsmacked that Cllr Anderson is behaving in this manner.

"It seems he is more interested in scoring points than doing something for the city."

Unless Labour reconsider, six Liberal Democrats and one Liberal will decide who takes the top job.

Council leader Warren Bradley said: "We will continue, with or without Labour, to ensure the best person is appointed as chief executive, and we will not stoop to the level of tit-for-tat politics."

Five candidates are in the running to replace Sir David.
