MADELEINE McCann’s parents are not reading too much into a mystery phone call about their daughter, friends said today. Kate and Gerry McCann put the European search for the four-year-old on hold after Spanish police sources contacted Portuguese detectives yesterday. The “credible” call was taken from a man who wanted to speak directly to the McCanns. But friends in Merseyside were today treating the phone call as hoax and police in Portugal appeared to dismiss the lead. Liverpool family friend Jon Corner, who is a godparent of the two-year-old McCann twins Sean and Amelie, said Madeleine’s parents were not getting their hopes up. He said: “We’re trying to not read too much into it. If there is something there, the Portuguese police will deal with it. “They have to take every phone call seriously and keep their equilibrium and stay objective and strong. “It’s difficult if it turns out to be a false lead and ends up going nowhere. “If there was anything in this news, I would have been called and I’ve not heard anything. “Gerry and Kate are truly amazing people, particularly the way they are coping through all of this.” The mystery phone call was traced to an unregistered pay-as-you-go phone from an unidentified country. It is not thought to be Morocco, where a previous possible sighting of Madeleine was reported. The caller did not reveal his identity or nationality, but the information was considered important enough to alert Mr and Mrs McCann. At about 3pm yesterday, the couple – who were about to fly from Germany to the Netherlands – were advised the caller might try to contact them, so they stayed on at the British embassy. It was thought the McCanns might need to go back to the UK to talk to advisers about the call. But all efforts to re-establish contact with the man failed and the couple decided to go on to Amsterdam. |
