As well as the dealers' trade fair,, the event includes variety shows, an awards ceremony and lectures from stars such as TV magician and vice president of the Magic Circle, Ali Bongo.

The conference, which runs from Tuesday, September 27, to Sunday, October 2, is the 11th to be held in Southport. The resort last held the convention in 2003.

Maxine McCarthy, Sefton's conference and corporate sales manager, said: "This is a wonderful conference which not only brings business into the resort, but also involves the whole community." Bob Hayden, IBM's public relations officer, added: "We like to go back to towns which meet our requirements for facilities and Southport is definitely one of those."

The International Brotherhood of Magicians, which has headquarters in St Louis, Missouri, was founded in 1922 and has more than 300 "rings" - or branches - worldwide.. The British ring was established in 1928.

It is the world's largest magicians' organisation,, with almost 15,000 members around the globe.
