More women bouncers 'with gentle touch' needed

Miss Hagan-Morgan, known at the bar simply as "V", is three times World and twice European women's kickboxing champion, and has worked doors in Liverpool for five years.

She said: "People do seem a bit surprised when they see me on the door, I think because I challenge their stereotypes that female bouncers are all butch and aggressive.

"I have a good rapport with the clients.

"If there is any trouble, my tactic is to reason with them and explain why they have to break it up or leave.

"Most of them are so shocked to be confronted by a woman that they back down straight away. Men don't feel as antagonised or threatened by a woman, so I think we have the edge."

Paul Chase, managing director of Britain's biggest licensing trade training group, the Merseyside-based Confederation of Professional Licensees, said the industry still needed to attract more women.

He said: "We estimate not more than 10% of door staff in Liverpool are women, but if you include the bar staff who are badged up to be able to do the job in theory, that figure rises to around 15%.

"We are slowly beginning to see an increase in the number of women applying to become door supervisors, but there are still not enough.

"There is a huge demand for women door staff, but they are still very much under-represented both nationally and locally."

A spokesman for the national regulatory body, the Security Industry Authority, said: "It is a very positive thing for us because we do want to clean up the image of the profession, and women reflect that well."
