They were followed and, as they walked through McGoldrick Park, were attacked by a gang of three or four men. When Anthony's girlfriend and cousin saw the axe-man bludgeon him they ran off to get help, frantically flagging down taxis and banging on doors. When they returned minutes later, they found Anthony slumped on the ground, with the axe still embedded in his head. Marcus Binns, 17, told the Daily Post: "We turned round and the men were stood behind us, we were all frightened. "We just ran and ran, but Anthony didn't get away. "We asked someone for help and they took us back to where it happened but just left us. "We got there too late. I have got to live with that for the rest of my life. "I wish I'd done something different, I wish I could have saved him." An 18--year-old man who was arrested after warrants were executed at four addresses in Huyton was last night released on police bail pending further inquiries. Another male, aged 17, from Huyton was arrested in connection with the murder and was taken to an undisclosed police station on Merseyside for questioning. Merseyside Police Chief Constable Bernard Hogan-Howe yesterday condemned the actions which led to the murder of Anthony. He said: "It is a disgrace that a young man who acted responsibly by walking his girlfriend to a bus stop at night has been brutally murdered. "It's even worse when you think that the only reason for this attack was the victim's colour. "Over the last 24 hours, we have had a phenomenal response from the public and we need that information to keep coming in.""
