TIMELINE OF MISSING MADDIE

THURSDAY MAY 3: Kate and Gerry McCann leave their daughter Madeleine and her two-year-old twin brother and sister, Sean and Amelie, in bed in their holiday apartment in the Portugueseseaside resort at the Ocean Club in Praia Da Luz and go for dinner.

The couple check on them regularly. Mrs McCann checks at 10pm and finds Maddie gone. Holidaymakers, staff at the resort and police spend the night searching frantically.

FRIDAY MAY 4: Sniffer dogs are brought in, the Spanish and border police and airports are notified and volunteer teams continue to search for clues. Relatives, including Maddie’s grandparents, start flying out to Portugal.

SATURDAY MAY 5: Three family liaison officers from Leicestershire police arrive.

SUNDAY MAY 6: The McCanns attend a mother’s day service in Praia Da Luz and prayers are said for Maddie and her family.

MONDAY MAY 7: Police begin investigating a claim a man was seen dragging a girl towards a marina a short drive from the resort.

TUESDAY MAY 8: People in Maddie’s home village of Rothley, Leicestershire, hold a silent vigil for the family.

Football stars Cristiano Ronaldo, John Terry and Paulo Ferreira makes his own appeals for help in tracing Maddie. the missing three-year-old, and is followed by fellow footballers John Terry and Paulo Ferreira.

WEDNESDAY MAY 9: Police examine a CCTV tape from a service station a few miles from Praia Da Luz showing a woman with a girl fitting Maddie’s description.

THURSDAY MAY 10: Kate McCann leads villagers and holidaymakers in prayer at the church in Praia Da Luz a week after Maddie’s disappearance.

FRIDAY MAY 11: Three British people are believed to have been taken in by police for questioning. It is believed they are potential witnesses rather than suspects.

SATURDAY MAY 12: Maddie turns four.

SUNDAY MAY 13: London lawyers from the International Family Law Group fly out to Portugal to assist the McCanns, and set up a special “fighting fund” so members of the public can make their own financial contribution to the search.

MONDAY MAY 14: The home of British man Robert Murat, 160 yards from where Maddie was snatched, is searched by police. Robert Murat has been living there with his mother Jenny.

TUESDAY MAY 15: Mr Murat is officially classed as a suspect by police in Portugal. He claims he is being made a “scapegoat” in the investigation.

WEDNESDAY MAY 16: Police raid Detectives in Portugal swoop on the home of 22-year-old Russian computer expert Sergey Malinka, who designed a website for suspect Robert Murat.

FRIDAY MAY 25: The first detailed description of a possible suspect is issued by police. The man is described as white, approximately 35 to 40 years old, of medium build and 5ft 10ins. He was wearing a dark jacket, beige trousers and dark shoes.

WEDNESDAY MAY 30: Kate and Gerry McCann attend a general audience with the Pope at the Vatican.

  • A vigil takes place at 7pm on Sunday at Holy Name church in Fazakerley, exactly one calendar month since Madeleine's disappearance. Holy Name is the church where Madeleine was baptised. The service for Madeleine and her family will be a combination of prayer, singing and reflection.
