Ray goes straight to the top

Mar 19 2007

Ray Quinn, Liverpool singer and X Factor star

SINGER Ray Quinn knew yesterday was going to be a special day. The Liverpool-born 18-year-old has had his date performing at the famous Cavern club circled in his diary for months.

It was also the day his name was being placed on the Wall of Fame, on Mathew Street.

But it was while at the Cavern that he learnt he’d also topped the album charts and, as a result, entered the record books as the youngest artist ever to have done so without first releasing a single.

Ray was also presented with a Guinness World Record for being the youngest male artist to enter the UK album chart at Number One without releasing a single.

Ray, runner-up in last year’s ITV X-Factor series, hammered X-Factor rival Ben Mills, who released an album at the same time as Quinn’s.

As Ray took to the stage, he told the 140-strong crowd, which included ex-Brookside actress Clare Sweeney: “I’ve got some news for you. I’m Number One, baby. I’m absolutely made up. I feel on top of the world. I keep having to pinch myself to make sure that I’m not dreaming.

“It’s fantastic that Gerry Marsden will be honouring me with my brick – he’s a legend. It’s a great honour this is happening in my home town. Liverpool has always been a loyal city.

“It’s great to be getting a Guinness award as well – I’ve always wanted to be in the Guinness book of records.

“It’s unreal to perform at the Cavern. Great names have performed here. If someone said to me a couple of years ago that I would be doing this today, I would think they were mad. It’s great performing on the same stage as Sir Paul McCartney. Today is a really emotional day for me. I’m dreaming a dream.”

Ray recorded his debut album at Capitol Studios, in Los Angeles, the studios made famous by his heroes such as Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin and he plans to return to the US soon to start work on some new tracks.

The former Brookside actor performed five songs, including Ain't That A Kick In The Head, Fly Me To The Moon, My Way, Mack The Knife and Smile. And the crooner did an encore of My Way – which was aptly renamed Ray’s Way – after being presented with his brick.
