THESE are the stunning new images of how the St John's shopping centre will look after a £100m revamp.

Site owner Land Securities, who yesterday submitted their proposals to city planners, say nearly 90% of Liverpool shoppers who have already viewed the plans have signalled their approval.

Land Securities say the centre, which was built in 1969 and last refurbished 19 years ago, has begun to show its age.

If they get the green light, work could start on the facelift by early 2009 and be completed in 2012.

The new proposals include dramatic improvements to the internal and external appearance of the centre and feature new double-height retail malls, glazed retail fronts to all streets, and roof spaces allowing much more natural light into the centre.

The market will be rehoused in a “21st-century market facility” in a newly extended Williamson Square building.

A modern food terrace will also be created on the first floor of the St John’s centre, providing shoppers with views of the city as they relax.

The internal transformation includes improved flooring, lighting and toilet facilities.

Access will also be improved through new entrances, lifts and escalators.

Plans went on public display in the centre’s marketing suite last month and feedback from the hundreds of visitors has been positive.

Land Securities retail development manager Tom Venner, who is leading the project, said: “Over 89% of those who filled out feedback forms welcomed the plans being proposed.

“We are pleased that people like the improvements we are proposing. We believe the shopping experience for shoppers and visitors to the centre will be enhanced if the works get the go-ahead from the council.”

The plans are on view for the rest of the year; the marketing suite is open weekdays between 10am-4pm and some weekends.
