The man, who asked not to be named, said: "It was absolutely terrifying. One of the houses hit has two young kids there and another an old woman on her own.

"Someone is going to get killed. All it needs is for someone to be in the street or a kid at the window and they're dead."

He was at home with his girlfriend between 10.30 and 11pm when gunfire exploded from the street.

He said: "There must have been at least five rounds and it was so fast it must have been an automatic weapon - it sounded like a machine gun.

"There were more shots from the kids on the corner, but I don't know what gun they were using. I reckon there were 10 or 12 of them there, I don't know how one of them wasn't killed."

Armed officers sealed off Sandway Crescent, off Carr Lane.

A mother-of-two, who has lived in the area for six years, heard seven shots.

She said: "In the last 12 months it's gone bad around here. It seems to be one shooting after another, but last night it was on my doorstep. It was terrifying."

As more residents spoke of the ongoing gun problem, one local dad had to duck under police tape to take his two young children to school. He simply shook his head, as he walked away from the street.

A police spokeswoman said nobody was injured and added: "It is not clear at this stage what the intention of the gunman was or who - or what - their intended target was."

Firearms experts are today examining a car found burnt out in Col-more Road, Norris Green, last night.
