They arrived at the scene in seven minutes, even though the incident was outside the area normally covered by Toxteth.
Mr Gibson, said: "The crew have never worked together before but in this short time they have been trained to a high standard and built up a fantastic team spirit.
"Two of them have not been on a fire engine for nearly seven years, but it's amazing how quickly their skills came back."
Fire crews were also called out to a blaze at the King of Hearts pub in Larkhill Place, Clubmoor, at 1.45am today.
Meanwhile, Merseyside's chief fire officer has caused fury by suggesting the region was safer with firefighters on strike.
He made the remarks before the Fire Brigades Union announced the further strike days as the row over proposed cutbacks continues.
