ECHO editor Alastair Machray said: "Of course there are famous names, places and phrases that will no doubt make it on to any list.
"But everyone has their own personal and quite unique thoughts and feelings about what Liverpool means to them.
"We also want to open this up to those people who live beyond Liverpool's local government-imposed boundaries, people who see themselves as Liverpudlian whether they live in Bootle, Birkenhead, Hale or Huyton.
"For me, it's the sight of Hilbre Island seen from the Royal Liverpool Golf Club."
Staff at the ECHO have kicked things off with a few suggestions of their own for what sums up Liverpool, from the descriptions vibrant, surprising, defiant and separate, to the river, the city's unique smell, and "Dock Road as a child".
Now we want you to send your own top five nominations, each no longer than five words.
So put your pen to paper and let us know what comes to mind when you think of our city - no offensive language please - and send your letter, including your name, age, address and phone number to: 2008 Poster, Rachael Tinniswood, Liverpool ECHO, PO Box 48, Old Hall Street, L61 3EB, or email rachaeltinniswood @liverpoolecho.co.uk
