In the meantime, it wants to: . Extend the Kirkby line by a mile and build anew station at Headbolt Lane, to serve North-wood and Tower Hill. * Redevelop Kirkby bus station to prepare for Everton's possible relocation. * Modernise Central and Lime Street stations. * Buy extra trains to sort out capacity problems. * Create a city centre bus loop and more coach parking. * Set up a park-and-ride scheme at Gillmoss. Merseytravel will also look at reopening the mothballed Wapping and Waterloo tunnels to create faster rail and road links from Edge Hill to the city centre and docks. Cllr Peter Millea, Liverpool's executive member for transport, said: "Waterloo tunnel would create anew freight link from the M62 to the docks, taking traffic away from Switch Island, Queens Drive and Edge Lane. "Wapping tunnel would allow anew city centrerail loop, connecting the Northern and City lines." No charge just yet AN investigation into whether London-style congestion charging should be brought to Liverpool is to be launched. Merseytravel has asked ministers for £1.1m to carry out the study, which will look at how city centre traffic is likely to hit the area's economy in the next few years. But transport bosses insist it is not the first step to introducing a congestion charge - they just want to take advantage of government cash on offer. They say car ownership in Liverpool is still low, with just 350 per 1,000 people. Cllr Peter Millea, executive member for transport, said: "We will not be bringing in a congestion charge in the next five or 10 years. "We have a chance to develop better public transport so people can make the switch from their cars because an alternative is available, rather than being forced to by a congestion charge." |
