Restrictions reflect strong emphasis on viaduct safety
BIDSTON Moss Viaduct, which opened in 1970, was built using traditional shipbuilding techniques.
It is a 730-metre long box girder bridge which carries the M53 over the A554 roundabout and the Birkenhead to New Brighton railway.
Jointly owned by the Highways Agency, Wirral Council and Mersey Tunnels, it was strengthened in 1998/99 to meet new legislation introducing 40-tonne vehicles to Britain.
At the time it was realised strengthening works were needed, and for safety, restrictions were placed on heavy goods vehicles.
