"Sir David talks about whingeing, but all we ever get from the city council are promises when we want delivery."
But Sir David's comments last night received the cautious backing of Neil Pakey, chair of The Mersey Partnership tourism board.
He said: "Tourism in Liverpool and Merseyside already offers a lot. That's why every year thousands of visitors from the likes of Spain, Germany and across the UK visit our city.
"Naturally the competition from other cities is strong and all of us must pull together to raise our standards higher.
"All of us can redouble our efforts to provide the best possible service to our customers and tourists in the run up to 2008."
