"Perhaps we will have something to say once we have had a chance to grieve properly but at the moment all we care about is Matthew's body coming home.

She paid tribute to her brother and said: "He was completely dedicated to his job. He has always wanted to be a soldier and we are very proud of him.

"He was also a very loving father, husband and brother. He was a great family man and we miss him terribly."

Major Titchner was barracked at Catterick, North Yorkshire, with his wife of six years, Raqual, and the couple's two-and-a-half year old son Matheson.

His widow is due to give birth to the couple's second child on Christmas Eve.

Rebecca said: "It will be a very special baby."

The whole family is expected to travel to RAF Brize Norton, where the bodies of the three soldiers will arrive at midday.

Two other RMP officers, Warrant Officer Colin Wall, 34, and Corporal Dewi Pritchard, 35, were also killed and a fourth soldier was injured.

The three dead men were in a Nissan vehicle - part of an armed convoy of two vehicles - attacked while travelling from their base through a main street in Basra.
