The man for whom 'near enough' was never good enough

WILLIAM BIRCHALL was a hard-working man whose main concern was safety, his family said last night.

His son, mechanical craftsman Stephen, 37, told the Daily Post: "He was always safety conscious. He had a saying that 'near enough wasn't good enough'.

"As a tribute, his workmates at Pleasureland have built a stainless steel bird table under the Traumatizer ride, bearing that inscription.

"He enjoyed working there. He was well-respected, and people knew he was always there to help."

Mr Birchall, who enjoyed model making and caravanning, had worked as an engineer.

"He felt he was too young to retire, so he got the job at Pleasureland."

She added: "It has been difficult for the family since the accident, but we are coming to terms with it.

"Now the inquest is over, we can draw a line on it and start to get on with our lives again.

His wife, post office manager Renee, said: "He didn't want to remain not doing anything, so he looked around for something to do.
